Police arrested a Coeur d'Alene man Tuesday after he allegedly threatened others with a knife during a mental health crisis.

The Coeur d'Alene Police Department responded around noon on Tuesday to the 3100 block of W. Thorndale Loop for a report of a 35-year-old man who was experiencing a mental health crisis, "causing fear" in family members who were in the home, according to police.

Officers coordinated with the Mobile Mental Health Crisis Team, according to the department, and engaged with the man for more than an hour before the man's behavior became "increasingly aggressive." Mental health personnel and family members left the residence "for safety reasons."

While the man's mother attempted to calm him, he allegedly produced a knife and threatened her. Police said she was fearful but left the home without injury.

The Coeur d'Alene Police Department SWAT Team responded to the scene and de-escalation efforts continued, but the man was "erratic and noncompliant," according to police.

The man reportedly opened the garage door and indicated he intended to come outside, attempting to retreat back inside when contacted by SWAT officers.

"SWAT personnel deployed less-lethal tools and a K-9 unit to prevent him from re-entering the home and safely took him into custody," a news release said.

Police confirmed that two "less-lethal" rounds hit the man and a K-9 bit him.

He was booked into jail on charges of aggravated assault and resisting arrest, according to police.
