Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 hours, 29 minutes AGO
Darlene Nicholson, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, passed peacefully April 16, 2026, surrounded by those who cared for her.
Born on Oct. 1, 1937, in Harlem, Mont., to John and Mary Green, Darlene carried the traditions of her small-town roots throughout her life. She married Pete (Paul) Nicholson on Nov. 29, 1958, and together they built a happy life together. Darlene and Pete raised their family in Havre, Mont., and spent countless happy days fishing and camping — traditions that wove a tapestry of memories and lifelong friendships.
As a Registered Nurse, Darlene brought competence and compassion to her work, spending the majority of her career with Dr. Stuart Reynolds in Havre. She cared for patients with a tenderness that earned her the respect of colleagues and the gratitude of those she helped. Her steady presence, wise counsel and warm smile comforted many through difficult times.
Darlene delighted in simple pleasures: the peaceful rhythm of the outdoors, the crackle of a campfire and the joy of teaching grandchildren how to fish. She had a generous spirit and a way of making everyone feel cared for.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Green; her sisters, Doris Renaker and Wilma Maxwell; and the love of her life, Pete Nicholson.
Darlene is lovingly remembered by her children: Jim (Kathy) Nicholson of Montana, Marlene Nicholson of New Mexico, and Joyce (Barry) Dexter of Idaho; and by her grandchildren: Kara (Thomas) Markovich of Tennessee, Alex (Shannon) Verploegen of North Dakota, Kallie (Josh) Gordon of Idaho, Max Nicholson of Montana, and Kyle (Amy) Dexter of Montana, and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of North Idaho, 2290 W. Prairie Ave., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83815, in gratitude for the care and compassion they provided her in her last days.
A celebration of Darlene’s life will be announced at a later date.
