PREP TRACK & FIELD ROUNDUP: Sandpoint sprinters break more records at Legends Twilight Invitational

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 2 hours, 44 minutes AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 28, 2026 3:00 PM

WALLA WALLA — At this point, it's becoming a weekly occurrence.

Sandpoint High sprinters Isaac Schmit, Maverick Gomez, Kamren Ziarnick and Trey Blumenberg worked their magic once again as the Sandpoint High 4x100 relay record and the 200-meter dash record were broken at the Legends Twilight Invitational held Saturday at Walla Walla High's Dave Klicker Track.

The foursome beat out 16 other teams to win the 4x100 relay in 42.07 seconds — .27 seconds ahead of their previous school record time set last week in Cheney. With the absence of a 4x200 relay on the schedule, Schmit, Gomez, Ziarnick and Blumenberg put together a 4x400 relay and posted an impressive time of 3 minutes, 32.96 seconds, which ranks as No. 8 in school history.

Individually, Gomez beat out 44 other competitors and took down his own school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.89 seconds — .05 seconds ahead of his time of 21.94 seconds set at last year's state meet. The standout senior, despite a headwind, was also first out of 50 competitors in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.76 seconds.

"He was so strong in the 100 and 200 — he just dominated," Sandpoint High head coach Doug Fry said. "Everybody was running a bit slower due to swirling winds, but Maverick did not miss a step. He got out to great starts and led the whole way."

Schmit, a senior, added a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.11) and an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.62) while Blumenberg, a junior, was seventh in the 200-meter dash (22.55). Junior Knox Williams and sophomore Hayden Peterson also had top-10 performances for Sandpoint, which finished eighth out of 20 scoring teams. Williams was eighth out of 32 competitors in the 400-meter dash (51.31) while Peterson was eighth out of 39 in the javelin (149 feet, 2 inches). In the distance events, senior Paul Kent rounded out the day's top times as he finished 10th in a highly competitive 1600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 26.23 seconds, which moves him up to No. 4 all-time on the school record boards.

In girls action, senior Elia Howard garnered three top-10 finishes to lead the way for the Lady Bulldogs, which placed ninth out of 20 scoring teams. The standout sprinter was fourth out of 41 in the 100-meter dash (12.70), sixth out 42 in the 200-meter dash (26.64) and was fifth out of 30 in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.82 seconds, which ranks as tied for No. 3 all-time in school history.

Elizabeth Storms, yet again, continues to climb the record books as she finished second out of 33 in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 18.23 seconds — just .01 seconds behind Maren Davidson's time in 2022 and .13 seconds behind the school record, set by Hannah Davidson in 2017. The standout junior was also 14th in the 1600-meter run as she crossed the line in 5 minutes, 19.74 seconds, which is another top-10 program mark.

Senior Izzy Davidson turned in a third-place finish out of 26 competitors in the pole vault (10 feet, 6 inches) and fellow senior Jasmin Laing tied for second out of 17 in the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches) for Sandpoint.

"It was just really fun," coach Fry said of the meet. "It was a great performance, and our kids were relaxed and having a good time. They really performed well."

Priest River's Lamanna captures trio of golds at 29th Annual Priest River Invitational

PRIEST RIVER — Senior Ian Lamanna beat out 26 other competitors to win the 100-meter dash (11.94), beat out 20 other competitors to win the long jump (20 feet, 0.5 inches), and then won the pole vault (14 feet, 4 inches) for a total of three gold medals on the day as he led all area athletes at the 29th Annual Priest River Invitational held Saturday at Priest River High.

Lamanna's clear of 14 feet, 4 inches in the pole vault was a new meet record — one inch ahead of Klein Fragoso's mark for Sandpoint High in 2024.

Senior Niki Porinchok added a win in the discus, beating out 36 other competitors with his mark of 166 feet, 2 inches. Peyton Whitehead, Kellen Smith, Landon Blackburn and Gunnar Pettit combined to win both the 4x200 relay (1:38.95) and 1600 sprint medley relay (4:11.17) for the Spartans, which placed third out of nine scoring teams.

Sandpoint High freshman Landon Conner was first out of 21 competitors in the 1600-meter run (4:50.79) as the Bulldogs went 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 in the event. Senior Julian Knight was first out of 14 competitors in the 800-meter run (2:09.43) while sophomore Caleb Tomlinson was second in the high jump with a clear of 6 feet, 2 inches for the Bulldogs, which won the team title with 208 points.

Senior Westin Caven won the 110-meter hurdles (17.98) and was second in the 300-meter hurdles (43.75) for Clark Fork, which finished seventh out of nine scoring teams.

In girls action, sophomore Lillian Grant was first out of 11 competitors in the 800-meter run (2:38.85) and first out of 12 competitors in the 1600-meter run (5:50.45) while junior Jordyn Tomco added a pair of wins in the 100-meter hurdles (18.84) and the javelin (90 feet, 6 inches) for Sandpoint's girls, which won the team title with 175.5 points.

Priest River girl's, which finished sixth out of six scoring teams, were led by junior Ashlynn Korff, who produced wins in the long jump (14 feet, 3.5 inches) and the triple jump (28 feet, 9.5 inches).

"Overall, 17 of our 19 athletes finished the week with at least one personal best," Priest River High head coach Jared Hughes said. "... This is the result of the hard work being put in by the athletes and coaches. I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped run our home meet. Without them, the meet would never be the success it is."

Sandpoint, Priest River and Clark Fork will all return to action on Thursday when they head to Post Falls for the District 1 Meet of Champions meet.
