The sporty, competitive bunch at DREAM Adaptive Recreation were voted best nonprofit in the Best of Whitefish competition.

DREAM Adaptive Recreation is a robust, year-round organization serving nearly 400 unique individuals through more than 1,700 lessons and experiences annually, supported by 250 volunteers and a dedicated staff of eight. It serves kids, adults and veterans.

Its year-round programs include Alpine Ski & Ride, Nordic skiing, paved-path cycling, mountain biking, fishing, paddle boarding and kayaking, and motorized water sports including water skiing, wakeboarding and wake surfing.

DREAM Executive Director Julie Tickle said advocacy and awareness are a core part of its mission, and the organization is working to shift how access is approached. She said that involves a shift from seeing access as an afterthought to making intentional design choices for access.

“Our work extends beyond our year-round programs. Through partnerships and access projects, we help improve trails, waterways and outdoor spaces so more people can experience them,” Tickle said. “We collaborate with community partners to share knowledge, provide training and advance inclusive practices across the outdoor industry.”

DREAM began in 1985 as an organization that focused on education and awareness around accessible tourism. A few years later, its adaptive ski program on Big Mountain began. The nonprofit continues to grow, in depth and breadth.

Throughout its 40 years, DREAM’s programming, advocacy and access projects back up its belief that everyone deserves to experience the many benefits of outdoor recreation.
