KNAPP: An assessor’s opinion

I am writing as a long-time mass-appraisal professional, not on behalf of any organization I serve.

County assessors play a critical role in ensuring that property valuation is fair, uniform, and grounded in law. The position requires not only technical knowledge, but also sound judgment, transparency, and the ability to communicate clearly with the public — especially in times when property values and taxpayer concerns can be contentious.

As an assessor, I believe the work is best done with consistency, transparency, and a focus on serving the public rather than drawing attention to the office itself.

In evaluating candidates for this role, I believe it is essential to consider who is best prepared to uphold these standards consistently and professionally. In my view, Allyson Knapp demonstrates the experience, temperament, and commitment to public service that this position demands. Her approach reflects a respect for both the technical responsibilities of the office and the importance of maintaining public trust.

Elections like this are not simply about policy differences or popularity contests — they are about ensuring that the office is led by someone who can carry out its duties with fairness, accountability, and professionalism.

For these reasons, I support Allyson Knapp for Kootenai County assessor.
