Just west of Plains off Burnham Lane sits a state-of-the-art cabinet shop called Hostetler Custom Cabinetry.

Founded in 2024, owner Samuel Hostetler brings years of experience in both the cabinet and construction industries.

Hostetler’s first career was dairy farming on his family’s farm in Wisconsin.

“I was tired of milking cows. This wasn’t working out, and I didn’t see a future in the dairy industry,” Hostetler said. “I told my dad, why don’t we go into woodworking?”

The two sold their cows and, when Hostetler was just 17, started a furniture manufacturing company. The business grew to service several states.

Later with a young family, Hostetler felt the pull to move west. He settled in eastern Montana near the Ashland area in the late 1990s and opened his own furniture shop. After several years working in construction, Hostetler eventually relocated to Plains in 2008 to be closer to family.

In 2024, the business moved to its current location at 7 Burnham Lane near Plains.

When asked about his chosen profession, Hostetler said, “This is really where my heart is. I love the smell of wood. I love building beautiful cabinetry and furniture.”

He added, “I see a great opportunity to build a business that can produce high-quality jobs for young people here in this area. I am very aware of the lack of good quality jobs in this valley.”

“I see a great future here."

Currently, the business employs five people, ranging from custom cabinet designer, Jerry Slaeaugh, to shop foreman, Dwayne Kinsinger.

Hostetler anticipates continued growth for the company. Tentative plans include building a larger shop and office along Highway 200 and eventually expanding the workforce to as many as 25 employees.

Hostetler can be reached at 406-826-5820.
