PREP SOFTBALL: Lakeland clinches 5A IEL title with win in opener

LEWISTON — Junior Raygen Dutton hit a two-run single and sophomore Katie Nave added a two-run double in a six-run sixth inning that cemented the Lakeland Hawks’ 15-3 win over the Lewiston Bengals on Tuesday at Airport Park, clinching the 5A Inland Empire League title for Lakeland. 

Lewiston won the second game 13-11. 

As the No. 1 seed, Lakeland (17-4, 9-1 5A IEL) will host the 5A Region 1 tournament May 8 in Rathdrum.

Abigail Helmholz struck out six, walked four, scattered seven hits and allowed one earned run in the opener for Lakeland. 

Dutton finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Hawks. Nave also drove in three runs. 

In the second game, freshman Ella Ferguson went 3 for 4 with a triple and double, three RBIs and two runs scored for Lakeland, Ada Blakemore went 3 for 4, and Delilah Zimmerman had four hits on the day. 

Ava Thorson hit three home runs and drove in six runs in the second game for Lewiston (8-15, 7-5). 

Lakeland wraps up the regular season Thursday with a home doubleheader vs. Moscow in 5A IEL play.

POST FALLS — Senior McKenna Zimmerman went 7 for 9 with two home runs, five RBIs and seven runs scored on the day as the Trojans swept the visiting Bulldogs. 

Zimmerman hit both her homers in the second game for Post Falls (9-12), finishing 4 for 4 with three RBIs and four runs in the nightcap. She had two doubles in the first game, three on the day. 

Lexie McCarroll allowed two hits in the five-inning second game for the Trojans. Jaya Felix drove in three runs in the opener. Riley Carpenter had four hits on the day.  

Teagan Newsom homered in each game, including a three-run shot in the seventh inning of the first game for Sandpoint (9-13). 

Post Falls travels to Lake City on Thursday at 4 p.m. in the loser-out first round of the 6A District 1 tournament.

ST. MARIES — Lyssa Watkins singled and scored on a fielder’s choice with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap as the Lumberjacks swept the Spartans in Central Idaho League play at PotlatchDeltic Field. 

Addilyn Turner drove in five runs in the second game for St. Maries (3-9, 2-8), three on a third-inning homer. 

Watkins struck out six and allowed two hits in the first game for the Lumberjacks. Lyla Maetche went 5 for 7 with an RBI and four runs scored on the day. Taryn Brebner hit a pair of doubles in the second game. 

St. Maries travels to Priest River (3-16, 0-11) on Thursday.
