VOLUNTEERS: Joy to my heart

Reading Jack Freeman’s article, on Friday April 24, in the Local Section of the Press, about the Sandpoint High School students putting together 3 new benches for the Long Bridge, brought joy to my heart.

There’s a particular kind of pride that can’t be taught in a classroom alone — it has to be experienced with your hands, your time, and your community. When young people volunteer to help build park benches for the local VFW, they’re doing more than assembling wood, metal and bolts; they’re building a sense of purpose.

The act itself is simple, but the impact runs deep. Students see firsthand that their effort creates something lasting, something others will use and appreciate. A bench becomes more than a place to sit—it becomes a symbol of contribution. That realization sparks a quiet joy: the knowledge that they’ve done something worthwhile.

Just as important is what it represents for the broader community. There’s a shared pride in knowing that local schools value hands-on learning and recognize the importance of practical skills. Teaching physical trades in this way goes beyond career preparation; it shows students how those skills can serve others.

Moments like these connect generations. Veterans, students, and neighbors all benefit, and the result is stronger than any single project. It’s a reminder that when young people are given the opportunity to build, they don’t just create structures — they help build community itself. Bravo to the Teachers, Students and everyone involved in this project. This brings Joy to My Heart.
