BASEBALL

SPIRIT LAKE — Timberlake coach Bryce Johnson knew.

There’s just too much history.

He knew.

Leading 8-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning in an elimination game, Johnson soon found himself regrouping after a seven-run rally by the Badgers.

Junior Gage Haines had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, scoring senior Eric Wylie with the winning run as the top-seeded Timberlake Tigers beat the second-seeded Bonners Ferry Badgers 10-9 to advance to a state 4A qualifier next week. Timberlake, ranked eighth by MaxPreps.com, must be among the top four district champions to host a best-of-3 series next week. Bonners Ferry (5-18) is 14th.

“Give a ton of credit to Tom (Turpin) and Bonners Ferry, they never quit,” said Johnson, in his seventh season as coach. “You know it’s never over when you play them. In the back of my mind, you know what they’re capable of, and that’s a huge kudos to Tom.”

Bonners Ferry took the lead on a single by junior Jacob Solt to take a 9-8 lead. Timberlake junior Nate Beardsall tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, driving in Dane Perkl to even the score at 9-9.

“Bonners Ferry earned it and put the pressure back on us,” Johnson said. “We were a little sloppy and they took the lead. Gage has been working on his swing, and it was really good to see him come through. I’m really proud of the fight our guys showed. They were loud and up and just never lost belief they were going to score a run, or two.”

It is the fourth straight district title for Timberlake.

“I’m extremely proud of them,” Johnson said. “It’s such a great group. They really wanted this.”

Timberlake 1-1

SPIRIT LAKE — Senior Joci Lee struck out 17 in the opener, then fanned 10 in the nightcap for the Wildcats in a sweep of the Tigers in a nonleague doubleheader at Timberlake High.

Sophomore Shae Jones struck out 10 in both games for Timberlake (9-9), which travels to St. Maries today.

“Two tough losses to Kellogg today,” Timberlake coach Jenny Whaley said. “We had some errors that allowed four runs to score and that was the difference maker in both games. Kellogg is coached well and their pitcher did a great job.”

Kellogg (12-4) is off until districts next week.

“We had some young girls step up and play new positions and put the ball in play, so that was exciting,” Whaley said. “We’ve got to move on and be ready for the next game and districts next week.”

Timberlake is scheduled to host Bonners Ferry in the 4A District 1 tournament starting on Monday.
