Range Riders fall in Friday doubleheader

BOISE, Idaho — After leading in both games of a doubleheader, the Glacier Range Riders fell late in both games to the Boise Hawks in Pioneer League baseball on Friday evening. 

Glacier (33-31, 4-12 in the second half) was six outs away from taking the opener before Boise (33-31, 10-6) broke through with a five-run inning. The nightcap followed with the Range Riders battling back from an early deficit to grab a 5-4 lead, only to see the Hawks answer with two runs in the sixth to complete the sweep. 

Hawks 5, Range Riders 4 

Carson Garner’s ninth homer of the season helped Glacier jump to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. After Garner’s longball, Jacob Steele added an RBI double, and Logan Beard drove in another run on a groundout. 

The sixth inning was all Boise. William Neaves lined a two-run double before Logan Meyer followed with a two-run single to give the Hawks the lead. John Pyle added an RBI single to extend the score to 5-3. 

In the seventh, Donovan Ratfield drove in Jacob Steele on a sacrifice fly, but Boise retired two hitters to hold on. 

Brody Capps went 3 for 3 to lead the Range Riders, while Steele added two hits. Meyer finished with two RBIs for Boise.

Beard’s seventh homer of the season gave Glacier a 2-1 lead in the second inning, and the Range Riders battled back again after Boise answered with three runs in the third. 

Capps tied the game with his first longball of the season in the fourth before Vradenburg reached on an error in the fifth that scored Millan, giving Glacier a 5-4 advantage. 

Boise immediately answered as John Pyle scored on a Glacier error to tie the game before Michael O’Hara crossed the plate on a wild pitch that proved to be the winning run. 

Capps led Glacier again, going 2 for 4 while Vradenburg added two hits as well. Jeremiah Begora went 3 for 3 and homered to lead the Hawks. 

The six-game series resumes on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
