EDITORIAL: Three festivals, countless treasures

There's just something about the combination of Art on the Green, Taste of Coeur d'Alene, and the Street Fair that feels not only unique to North Idaho, but like Coeur d'Alene in its purest form. 

Our city seems built for weekends like this. 

The classic charm of downtown blends effortlessly with the towering trees of City Park and the North Idaho College campus. Add the backdrop of Lake Coeur d'Alene and you've got a setting that feels almost tailor-made for gathering, wandering, and celebrating. If someone wanted to understand why so many people fall in love with this place, I'd tell them to spend a day walking this weekend. 

This is a place meant for people. Tens of thousands of them. 

And while there will always be those who wonder whether these events should be spread across separate weekends to maximize their individual drawing power, I say nay! 

The magic is that they're all happening at once. The best part of this weekend is the mystery it holds for every person who steps into it. 

You might arrive with a purpose. Maybe you're looking for a gift, a painting, or a specific food vendor you've been thinking about since last summer. But more often than not, you find something you never expected. 

Where else can you pick up a handcrafted leather bag, design a custom T-shirt, discover a piece of art you suddenly can't imagine living without, sample local beer(s), listen to live music, and then turn around and debate whether lunch should be tacos, teriyaki, a churro, or all three? 

This is a weekend for the treasure hunters.

They're looking for the perfect handmade necklace. The painting that belongs above the fireplace. The food booth they'll tell their friends about for the next year. That one artist whose social media page they'll follow the minute they get home. 

And once they've found it, they'll do what people always do when they discover something special. They'll tell everyone they know. 

That's what makes this weekend work. 

Each event brings people in for a different reason, but together they create something bigger than any one festival could produce on its own. You wander from downtown to the park to NIC and back again, never quite sure what's around the next corner. The experience becomes less about checking things off a list and more about stumbling onto your next favorite thing. 

Of course, not everybody loves the crowds. Not everybody enjoys hunting for parking or weaving through thousands of people on a hot August afternoon. But for the rest of us, that's part of the charm. 

For one weekend, Coeur d'Alene feels alive in a way that's difficult to describe unless you've experienced it yourself. The city becomes one giant community gathering, filled with artists, musicians, craftsmen, food vendors, families, tourists, and locals all sharing the same space. 

And maybe that's the best thing you'll find all weekend. 

Maybe it isn't the artwork, the food, or whatever treasure you carry home in a shopping bag. Maybe your new favorite thing is simply being surrounded by thousands of people who love Coeur d'Alene as much as you do.
