Aug. 6, 1976 – KWIK STOP BURGLED 

A burglary of the Kwik Stop Dairy yesterday netted an unknown suspect $40, taken from the store while it was open for business. A customer apparently reached into a drawer where the bag of money was kept and stole it while the employee’s back was turned. A twist to the puzzle occurred about 8 this morning when the employee who reported the theft found the [empty] money bag in her car.

MORE BUYERS THAN SELLERS 

Buyers outnumbered sellers at Saturday’s  Chamber of Commerce “Tailgate Days” at the County Fairgrounds. Over 200 people attended the farmer’s market, most of them looking for garden produce. “For the first one, it was a great success,” said Bill Watkins, agriculture committee chairman. 

Anyone with garden fruits and vegetables to sell is asked to bring them next Saturday, when the market will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., instead of all day.

McGOVERN OPENS REALTY OFFICE 

Bernie McGovern, long associated with Sandpoint Realty as an insurance and real estate salesman, is opening his own office. When Sandpoint Realty sold its insurance operations in June, McGovern stayed behind to work with the new owner, Richard Hooley. The office at 407 N. 2nd will now house Sandpoint Insurance Agency as well as McGovern Realty.

Aug. 6, 1951 – ANNUAL GRANGE PICNIC 

On Sunday about 75 Grangers and their families, representing 10 Granges, gathered at the Sandpoint Lakeside park for the yearly Pomona Grange picnic. There was fried chicken and every other food grown by farmers, topped off by ice cream furnished by the Pomona Grange home economics dept. Prizes were awarded to the oldest couple, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Grigg; largest family, Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Barney, and youngest child, Mr. and Mrs. Millard Clark. Ball games and ring tossing were enjoyed by all.

NEWS FROM CABINET by Mrs. C.A. Newlon 

Mrs. Lola Macumber and Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Newlon canvassed the Cabinet area regarding school enrollment. They found 12 high school pupils and 38 grade pupils, with more families seeking homes in the district before school starts this fall. 

Nearly all the children and many adults have been enjoying swimming and sun bathing at the beach.

PROTESTS FILED ON GARFIELD BAY ROAD 

Residents served by the Sagle-Garfield bay road have registered strong protests to the state highway department due to the rough condition of the road, the only route to the Garfield bay resort area and many nearby farms. The highway dept. took over the route as a farm-to-market road late last year, but besides running grading equipment on it this spring, the section has had no attention. Traffic on the road is very heavy and area residents say they will keep after the highway dept. until something is done.
