Idaho gas prices creep up

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular in the Gem State is $4.30, which is 6 cents higher than a week ago, 25 cents higher than a month ago, and 82 cents higher than a year ago.

The national average currently sits at $4.09 per gallon, which is two cents less than a week ago, but 27 cents more than a month ago and 94 cents more than a year ago.

Idaho moved up two places and now ranks 10th in the country for the most expensive fuel. California leads the way at $5.65 and Texas drivers are paying the least at $3.59 per gallon.

Some stations in Coeur d'Alene were offering gas for about $4 a gallon Tuesday.

“Uncertainty in the Middle East is at the heart of the matter. Crude oil prices rise and fall with every change and rumor,” said AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. “If the higher pump prices continue, we may see some demand destruction as drivers who have already completed their summer road trips say, ‘Thanks, but no thanks.’”

The West Texas Intermediate benchmark for crude oil is now trading near $80 per barrel after hitting $92 as recently as July 24. Crude oil supplies are still constrained in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb. However, if talks between the U.S. and Iran are productive, it could translate into cheaper crude and, in turn, lower gas prices.
