K-9 Appa improving after being shot

Appa is getting better.

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office on Thursday shared a positive update on K-9 Appa, who was injured in the line of duty on Tuesday night.

Following the incident, K-9 Appa underwent two surgeries Wednesday and his prognosis is good, a press release said. K-9 Appa has since been released from veterinary care and is recovering at home with his handler and family, where he will continue to receive the rest and care needed during his recovery.

"The outpouring of support from our community has been overwhelming. We are deeply grateful for the prayers, encouragement, and well wishes that have been extended to K9 Appa, his handler, and our entire Sheriff's Office family during this difficult time," the release said.

"While K9 Appa still has a road to recovery ahead of him, we are encouraged by his progress and remain hopeful for his continued healing," the release said. "We extend our sincere appreciation to the veterinary professionals whose expertise and compassionate care played a critical role in K9 Appa's treatment, as well as to everyone who has stood beside us with their unwavering support."

App was shot by a suspect that KCSO deputies were pursuing in the Wolf Lodge Creek Road area Tuesday night. 

"A deputy-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was later pronounced deceased,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
