Judge Charles Pray, who as a Montana Congressman decades before battled for the creation of Glacier National Park, saw the creation of the new Pray shelter at the head of Two Medicine Lake. Pray Lake in Two Medicine is also named after him.

The new campground at Beaver Creek opened along the Spotted Bear River. Columbia Falls was seeking bids for an addition to the pool, which would include a new bath house. A horse collided with a plane at the Meadow Creek airstrip. No one was killed, but the plane had about $4,000 in damage. No word on how the horse made out as it went onto the strip as the plane was landing.

The legend of the “fur bearing” trout from Iceberg Lake in Glacier National Park was a front page story. The trout was wrapped in a gopher skin, photographed and then became a legend, as it sold more than 100,000 postcards for creator J.H. Hicken, a dispatcher of the Great Northern Railroad.

A Canadian motorist went through a wood guardrail on the Going-to-the-Sun Road and plunged 350 feet to his death. Ross Alden Reed, 43, of Cardston, Alberta, was apparently driving too fast when he lost control, hit the rail and went down the cliff in a convertible.

Toma Jercinovic, a well-known climber at the time, was killed when he fell off a cliff on Mount Edwards in Glacier National Park. He was known as an experienced climber who was always willing to help others.

The Red Eagle Fire, which started near Red Eagle Lake, blasted out of Glacier on high winds and went down the valley and across highway 89 into the Blackfeet Reservation a day as it was stoked by high winds. It was the first big fire on Glacier’s east side since 1919.
