RISCH: Idaho is Leading in America’s Mining Revival

There’s good reason a miner is prominently featured on Idaho’s state seal.

Some of our earliest settlers came in search of precious metals. The Silver Valley quickly became one of the most productive mining regions in the world, and Idaho’s vast mineral wealth helped drive President Abraham Lincoln’s decision to establish the Idaho Territory.

In many ways, that miner represents not only Idaho’s history, but also our present and future as a leader in American mining.

With the reopening of Bunker Hill, continued production at Hecla’s Lucky Friday Mine, gold production near Murray by Idaho Strategic Resources, and other successful projects, North Idaho remains at the forefront of this critical industry.

However, it’s no secret that mining in the United States has faced significant challenges over the past several decades. Unnecessary permitting delays and burdensome federal regulations have stalled projects, costing jobs, slowing investment, and hurting rural communities. Meanwhile, countries like China are expanding production and tightening their grip on the global supply of critical minerals, the essential materials used in everything from advanced manufacturing and electric grips to the smartphones in our pockets.

We cannot continue down this road. More than ever, America must responsibly develop its own supply of the mineral resources our economy and national security depend on.

As your Senator, I have consistently fought to strengthen American mining and expand opportunities to use the critical minerals found in our own backyard. The Silver Valley is central to that effort, and I’m proud of its continued role in supplying the resources that power our economy, defense, and communities.

Supporting American mining does not mean turning a blind eye to the environment. Idahoans understand the importance of protecting the lands and waters that make our state special.

The mining operations of today are not those of the 1870s—or even the 1970s. Modern technology, stronger safeguards, and proven reclamation practices allow us to produce the minerals America needs while protecting the place we call home.

It’s time for the federal government to catch up with the reality of 21st-century by removing the outdated laws and unnecessary red tape that stand in the way of responsible mining projects.

My Mining Regulatory Clarity Act would take an important step by modernizing federal policies to provide greater certainty for critical mining operations. When we remove excessive barriers without compromising environmental standards, we give mines like those in the Silver Valley the confidence to expand, invest, and create good-paying jobs. This isn’t a partisan issue – one of my strongest partners on this bill is Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, a Democrat from neighboring Nevada.

Mining is woven into Idaho’s DNA, and nowhere is that more evident than in North Idaho. The hardworking men and women of the Silver Valley have helped power our state and nation for generations. I’m committed to advancing policies that ensure they can continue doing what they do best and keep Idaho at the forefront of American mineral production for decades to come.
