The board of trustees for the Coeur d’Alene Public Schools District will meet Monday to consider requesting a levy of $30.25 million per year for two years. 

This levy would replace the current levy of $25 million and would be in effect from July 1, 2027, and end June 30, 2029. The board is accepting public comment Monday before voting on the levy at a later date. If the motion passes, the levy will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot. 

Board Trustee Rick Rasmussen emphasized that the levy is necessary to maintain the same standards of education as previous years due to increased operating costs.

“We are the best bang for the buck for taxpayers in Idaho,” Rasmussen said. “We’re trying to be very good stewards of taxpayers' money.”

Of the total $30.25 million levy, $12.3 million will be allocated for teacher and support staff jobs, $7.1 million for student academic programs such as electives and advance placement classes, $4.3 million for school safety and health programs, $2.4 million for student athletics and extracurriculars, $1.8 million for school operating expenses such as utilities and maintenance, $1.3 million for technology and $1.2 million for classroom learning resources such as textbooks.

“We are very transparent about how we spend our money and we are very frugal,” Rasmussen said. “We need to spend this money to support our future workforce.”

The estimated average cost of the proposed levy per taxpayer is $110 per $100,000 of taxable assessed value per year. This is about a $19 monthly increase from the current levy tax rate, based on a property valued at about $545,000. 

Levy funding supports about 25% of the Coeur d’Alene School District’s budget.

The previous levy of $25 million was passed unanimously by the school board in 2024 and passed overwhelmingly in the Kootenai County election. 

The proposed levy will be discussed at the Coeur d’Alene School Board meeting Monday at 5 p.m. at the Midtown Center Meeting Room, 1505 N. Fifth St.
