Aug. 13, 1951 – PUBLIC VISTA AREA

The public will now be able to see construction work at the Cabinet Gorge dam site on the Clark Fork river. An observation point has been cleared and a safety fence erected on high ground on the north side of the river a short distance downstream from where the dam and power house will soon take form. The vista area can be reached by an access road from Hwy. 10-A, and will be open daily during daylight hours. It gives a sweeping view of the construction area where some 900 men are now doing preliminary work on the $40,000,000 project.

TO TOUR FARM IRRIGATION SYSTEMS

A tour Monday of county sprinkler systems will allow visitors to view different types of sprinkler irrigation systems and compare costs and results. The tour starts at the Byron Chronic farm south of Sandpoint, where 50 acres of hay and pasture land is irrigated with water from Algoma lake. The Lloyd Hatcher farm at Westmond, next on the tour, uses water from Cocolalla lake. At the Clark and Dawson ranch in the Morton area, an 1,800 foot ditch brings water by gravity from a creek running out of Jewel lake. The Phillips place at Morton has 30 acres of pasture and sunflower under irrigation from the Pend Oreille river. The tour concludes at the Glen Judge farm at Morton, where the sprinkler system is set up for grass nursery trials. Each of the farms on the tour has different problems and soil conditions. About 400 of the county’s 50,000 available acres of farmland are now under sprinkler systems.
