There's Magic at the Fair in Boundary County

BONNERS FERRY — There are few traditions that capture the heart of small-town America quite like the county fair.

It's where prize-winning pies sit beside hand-stitched quilts; where young exhibitors proudly show the animals they've spent months raising; where neighbors catch up over fair food; and where generations of families celebrate another Boundary County summer.

That tradition returns as the 2026 Boundary County Fair runs Aug. 11-15 with this year's theme, "There's Magic at the Fair." But long before the first visitors walk through the gates, months of planning, volunteering and preparation have already been underway to make the week possible.

Behind every exhibit, performance and activity is a dedicated group of volunteers, fair board members, staff and community partners working throughout the year to prepare the fairgrounds, coordinate entertainment, organize exhibits and create an experience that continues to grow while staying true to its small-town roots.

This year's fair will introduce several new attractions designed to appeal to all ages. A free Wild West Kids Park will provide an interactive play area for younger children, while caricature artists will create one-of-a-kind keepsakes throughout the week. Older kids can test their skills with Montana Action Paintball's gel blaster experience, and Saturday will feature free foam parties, giving families even more opportunities to spend the day together.

Food lovers will also have plenty to look forward to. A total of 18 food vendors are expected at this year's fair, many of them new this year, expanding the variety of options available for fairgoers.

"I think there's something for everybody down here at the county fair," fair manager Jaycee Atkins said. "It's really a place where the whole community comes together."

While new attractions continue to be added, one thing hasn't changed: admission and parking remain free for everyone who wants to attend.

"We're not charging for parking. We’re not charging for admission," Atkins said.

In an era when many fairs charge admission before visitors even step through the gate, the Boundary County Fair continues to welcome everyone free of charge, Atkins said. That commitment helps ensure the fair remains accessible for families and continues to serve as one of the community's largest annual gatherings.

The excitement extends beyond the fairgrounds as well. Businesses throughout Bonners Ferry are invited to participate in the annual "There's Magic at the Fair" window decorating contest, transforming storefronts into colorful displays celebrating this year's theme. Participating businesses must register to be eligible for judging, with the Boundary County Fair royalty set to judge the decorated windows on Monday, Aug. 10.

One of the fair's longest-standing traditions, the annual parade, will once again make its way through downtown Bonners Ferry on Saturday at noon. Residents are encouraged to line the streets to cheer on local royalty, 4-H members, community organizations, businesses and other parade entries as the celebration makes its way through town.

Inside the exhibit buildings, shelves and display cases will soon begin filling with photography, artwork, quilts, flowers, baked goods, crafts and countless other entries showcasing the talents of Boundary County residents.

Over in the livestock barns, 4-H and FFA members will proudly exhibit the animals they've spent months feeding, training and caring for. For many young exhibitors, fair week marks the culmination of a year's worth of hard work, dedication, responsibility and learning.

With parking expected to be more limited this year, organizers are encouraging visitors to take advantage of the free SPOT shuttle operating between Bonners Ferry High School and the fairgrounds throughout fair week. Riders will also be eligible to enter daily prize drawings for food vouchers at the fair, adding another incentive to leave the driving behind.

To help traffic flow more smoothly, fairgoers should also note that vehicle traffic through the fairgrounds will be one-way. Drivers will enter from Fifth Street near the tennis courts and exit on Fourth Street.

Although visitors experience five days of exhibits, entertainment and celebration, Atkins said the work behind the scenes never really stops.

"We work year-round to put the county fair together," she said. "We're excited to show everyone what we've worked so hard for, along with everything the community has worked so hard on through open class exhibits, 4-H projects and everything like that."

She hopes residents not only come out to enjoy the fair but also continue sharing ideas, volunteering and helping shape its future. As the fair continues to evolve, community involvement remains at the heart of everything it does.

County fairs have always been about more than exhibits and entertainment. They are a celebration of community, hard work and the traditions that connect one generation to the next. As another Boundary County Fair week begins, visitors will once again find familiar faces, new experiences and countless reasons to believe there's still a little magic to be found at the fair.
