Bernita Ann (Berger) Williams was born July 28, 1942, to Ernest and Lillian Berger at Sandpoint Bonner General Hospital.

She was the youngest of seven children and attended Upper Columbia Academy. She lived in Spokane and California before making it back to Sandpoint in the late 1960s working as a bus driver for Sandpoint school district. Bernita switched into the healthcare field and worked at “The Manor” as a certified nursing assistant for years until the mid-'80s when she opened Golden Acres and cared for family and elderly individuals in her home. She retired in 2002.

Bernita was an avid collector of Coca Cola memorabilia, cookie jars and salt and pepper shakers. She also loved gardening and long drives.

Bernita was mother to two daughters, Darcy Tretheway and Yvonne Kriger; and one son, David Williams. She married Darius Williams on April 2, 1972.

Bernita passed away in her bed in Kootenai, Idaho, on July 29, 2026, with family by her side the day after her 84th birthday.

She is survived by her children, David Williams of Newport, Washington, and Yvonne and her husband Bryan Kriger of Sagle, Idaho; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson; a sister, Lois Drake of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her mother and father; husband, Darius Williams; daughter, Darcy Tretheway of Goshen, Indiana; brothers, Art, Robert, and Ralph Berger; sisters, Mae (Berger) Knudson, and Genevieve (Berger) Thurlow, all of Sandpoint, Idaho, and Rose Halvorson of North Dakota.

The family would like to thank Bonner General Hospice for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in her final days. In lieu of flowers consider donating to Hospice.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026, at the Sandpoint VFW, 1325 Pine St. A potluck for friends and family will follow.
