Gairrett, East outscore West in All-Stars baseball

BUTTE — Columbus’ Koleman Gairrett hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning and a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth as the East outscored the West 17-16 in the second annual Montana High School All-Stars baseball game Saturday.

It was a bullpen game for both teams: 17 pitchers were used, and they threw a total of 463 pitches (231 by the West, in eight innings) with 18 walks. Both teams had 15 hits, and nobody had a better day than Gairrett — who also had a double, drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh and scored four times. 

West led 5-0, 9-5 and 13-11, but East answered each time. 

Doubles by Nico Young, Brady Buckmaster and Owen Felton fueled a four-run second inning for the West; East responded with five runs in the third, helped by a walk and a hit batter with the bases loaded.  

Young, from Columbia Falls, hit a two-run single in the fourth to make it 9-5; East put another five-spot in the fifth to lead 10-9. 

Whitefish’s Tait Orme drove in two, one with a seventh-inning double. Buckmaster drove in one run and fellow Glacier product Kaeden Kahler knocked in two. Polson’s Cole Haggard had an RBI.
