BARE OUR SHELVES: If you don’t have a library card, now’s the time to get one

Austin Fogelsong and Connie Baulne/Contributed column | Columbia Basin Herald | UPDATED 1 hour, 20 minutes AGO

Please join the Moses Lake Public Library for Library Card Sign-up Month in September! Remember, a library card is free for anyone who lives or owns property in Chelan, Douglas, Ferry, Grant or Okanogan counties. If you haven’t visited the library in a few years, your library card may have been purged for inactivity or may have expired. Ages 18 and over can apply online, or anyone can apply in person at the library. Discover all our amazing resources, including books, audiobooks, magazines, DVDs, music CDs, eBooks, eAudiobooks, Mango Languages, LinkedIn Learning and more. Our libraries also offer computers for public use free of charge and are equipped with Microsoft 365, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Also, you can print, scan, copy, and fax by utilizing a $5 credit that comes with your library card. Celebrate with us this September, and consider taking a photo with Chadwick, our library mascot, and show off your new library card!

The Moses Lake Public Library's two nonprofit organizations, the Friends of the Moses Lake Library and the Moses Lake Public Library Foundation, are key partners in supporting local advocacy efforts and ensuring that the library remains in the community. Interested in joining the Friends of the Moses Lake Library? Join them for their next monthly meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 1 p.m. in the library staff room. Our Friends are a crucial part of fundraising efforts, raising money to support library programming and help provide prizes and snacks for our Summer Reading and Winter Reading programs.

The Moses Lake Public Library regularly offers programming for kids, teens, and adults each week. Learn about a few of our featured programs coming up in September.

Join the Adult Book Club every third Friday (Aug. 21 or Sept. 18) for a great literary read and good conversation with a diverse group of fellow readers. The book title for August is “Gone Before Goodbye” by Harlan Coben and Reese Witherspoon. The book title for September is “The Cherry Tree Theory” by Rich and Rox Pink. If you are interested in joining, please call or visit the library and ask for Austin.

Do you enjoy power walking? Join Austin and the library crew for The Library Walkers, an accessible outdoor walk that starts at the library and winds through the Moses Lake Creative District. Wear ’80s-inspired fashion each Tuesday in September and be at the library by 10 a.m.

Parents, caregivers, and children ages birth-preschool are invited to attend our free literacy development event, the Early Learners Literacy Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. We will have vendors from various partner organizations. Stay tuned for more information about this program by following us on Facebook!

Do you have a crafting “problem”? We may be able to help! Join our free arts and crafts supply swap on Friday, Sept. 25, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Bring in your unwanted and unused craft supplies to the library and trade them with other crafters. There is a limit of two medium boxes or totes per person (for those bringing items). Participants must take home leftover items.

Bare Our Shelves will appear bi-weekly and features honest musings from your local library staff. Austin Foglesong is the Supervising Librarian II of the Moses Lake Public Library, a branch of NCW Libraries. He has a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Washington. Connie Baulne is the Operations Supervisor of the Moses Lake Public Library. She specializes in controlled chaos and creating a good schedule.
