Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 1 hour, 19 minutes AGO
Shannon Renee Howard (née Bird) passed away Aug. 13, 2026, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, after holding cancer at bay for more than two years.
Shannon touched the lives of those she knew with her abundant creativity, steadfast loyalty, quiet strength and kindness.
Born and raised in Coeur d'Alene, Shannon graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School and went on to attend the University of Idaho. Shannon devoted her professional life to public service, including 18 years with the city of Post Falls, most recently as City Clerk.
Shannon and her husband, Matt, were high school sweethearts. Married for 30 years, Matt and Shannon were true partners who built their family and home as a team, filling it with love, laughter, dogs, cats and Legos. Shannon was a devoted wife and mother as well as a fearless advocate for her children. The love she gave so freely to Matt, Patrick, Nick and Anna will remain — carried forward by the family she treasured.
Shannon was also highly artistic, patient and meticulous, which she channeled into painting, crafting, baking and puzzles. An enthusiastic fan of books, comics, movies, the Philadelphia Eagles and the world of Harry Potter, Shannon and her dry wit were invaluable on any game night.
Shannon was preceded in death by her mother, Brenda Bird, and is survived by her husband, Matt; their children, Patrick, Nick and Anna; her father, Richard and stepmother Judy; her siblings, Shelley (and Mike) Cheevers, Scott (and Diana) Bird, and stepsister Shannon (and John) Forbes; along with extended family, friends and colleagues.
Shannon was dearly loved and will be cherished always.
A celebration of Shannon's life will be held later in September. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Autism Society of Idaho.
