The Whitefish City Council approved a grant of $250,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Flathead Valley to fund the purchase of a second lot on Whitefish Avenue to build two more three-bedroom townhouses.

The lot adjoins the property Habitat Flathead bought a few months ago with the first installment of the city's funds.

"It is a little bit larger lot, so it will provide two townhomes but also park space for those four townhomes," Whitefish City Manager Dana Meeker said. "We do have $814,000 available for programs and projects for fiscal year 27, so the $250,000 [would] easily fit within the current budget."

The money comes from the resort tax fund and the decision to purchase the lot was supported by city staff.

The same requirements in the agreement for the first lot apply. The townhomes will be for families at or below 80% area median income, the project will be completed in two years, and Habitat will provide annual progress reports. The city has the ability to audit the project's financial records.

Habitat Flathead is taking applications on these townhouses until Oct. 31 and plans to have the four townhomes on Whitefish Avenue move in ready by June 30, 2027.

Whitefish voters will decide on funding for second fire station

The Whitefish City Council last week directed staff to move forward with plans for a second staffed fire station north of the Baker Avenue viaduct, with the final say coming from a voted levy. The station would require a minimum of nine new firefighters.
