WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Once North Idaho College figured out it couldn’t do what it had planned on the field, third-year coach Brad Williams made an adjustment at halftime.

Three goals in the second half later, and the Cardinals are 1-0 on the season.

Tyson Carter, Sebastiano Casini and Jabari Holtkamp each scored once for NIC in a season-opening 4-0 shutout of Walla Walla Community College on Friday afternoon.

Nathan Gutierrez, a freshman from Lake Worth, Fla., had four saves in the Cardinals' season-opening 4-0 shutout of Walla Walla Community College on Friday afternoon.

“For us, we had to change our playing style in the second half,” said Williams, who attributed the slow start to higher-than-normal grass due to Walla Walla Community College not allowing its grounds crew to mow the field for precautionary reasons with the air quality index being above 150. “We had to play more behind them in the second half. We had to be resilient and fight for each result. It’s a job done and good on our guys for adapting and finding a way to win the game.”

NIC travels to Wenatchee Valley College on Sunday.

Walla Walla is 1-2.
