BOISE — The Lake City Timberwolves nearly pulled off a courageous comeback in its season opener Friday night.

Backup quarterback Knox Keogh scored on a 5-yard keeper with just under 5 minutes left to pull Lake City to within one point of the Boise Brave.

But the extra-point kick was no good, and the Timberwolves never got the ball back as Boise ran off the final minutes with three first downs for a 14-13 victory at Dona Larsen Park.

“Our defense had some success at times, and we thought we could get a stop but we came up short,” fourth-year Lake City coach Byron Hout said.

Boise, which reached the first round of the state 6A playoffs last season, opened the scoring two minutes into the game on a 6-yard run by Logan McDonald.

Lake City answered with Brayden Van Leuven’s 4-yard run for a 7-7 tie in the first quarter.

Boise sophomore quarterback Wayne Bower hit Charlie Ruebel for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds left in the first half, and the Brave led 14-7 at halftime.

Lake City quarterback Britton Johnson limped off the field with a leg injury early in the fourth quarter.

Keogh, a junior, came in and completed a key fourth-down pass, then finished the drive with a TD run.

“Excited to make some corrections and come back home next week,” Hout said.

Lake City plays host to Lakeland next Friday.
