COEUR d’ALENE — As far as openers go, it was a banger for the Coeur d’Alene girls soccer team on Saturday.

Senior Jersey Larson scored on a free kick from 25 yards out, sending the 6A Vikings past the Moscow Bears, last year’s state 5A champions, 2-1 at the Coeur d’Alene High soccer field.

“Jersey created a turnover and just hit a banger to the upper right corner of the goal,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “She stole the ball, took a touch on it, and just hit it.”

It was the season opener for both teams.

“Moscow still has a really good team,” Vredenburg said. “We created a bunch of chances and just couldn’t get them into the back of the net. Our girls dug deep, especially after the tying goal, never gave up and got the win. I’m super proud of them.”

Coeur d’Alene hosts Rocky Mountain of Meridian on Friday.

First half — 1, Cd’A, Olivia Nusser (free kick), 6:00. Second half — 2, Mos, Abby Presti Monico (unassisted), 51:00. 3, Cd’A, Jersey Larson (unassisted), 65:00.

POST FALLS — Senior Sierra Sheppard scored two goals and assisted on another for the Panthers in a win over the Badgers in the season and Intermountain League opener for both at The Fields at Real Life.

“It’s always good to get the first win under our belt, especially against Bonners as they’ve really been playing us well in the past few years,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “Their coach has done good things with their program. The players that needed to step up for us did. The turf is unforgiving at pointing out some things we need to work on. But it’s early on, so I’m confident that we’ll continue to grow.”

RATHDRUM — Junior Cole Zlateff has been attending Lakeland High the past two years, but had been playing club soccer in the Spokane area.

He’s on the Hawks' roster now, and coach Nick Haynes couldn’t be happier.

Zlateff had a hat trick and assisted on another goal as the Hawks defeated the Bengals in a 5A Inland Empire League match at Sunrise Rotary Field.

“I had him in class last year,” Haynes said. “I mentioned to him that he should come play for us, and he decided to this year. And I’m really happy he is. He’s a dynamic player and something we’ve been missing for a while.”

All three of Zlateff’s goals came in the first half for Lakeland.

“We moved him around a little and tried to get him open,” Haynes said. “It was good to get a league win to start the season.”
