When people think about healthcare, they often think about doctor visits, surgeries, or emergency care. But healthcare is much more than a service. In Kootenai County, it is one of the region's most important economic drivers, a major employer, and a cornerstone of community well-being.
Healthcare is unique because it touches every person at some point in life. Whether welcoming a new baby, recovering from an injury, managing a chronic condition, or supporting a loved one through aging, healthcare plays a role in nearly every family's story. Behind each patient interaction is a workforce dedicated to caring for friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family members.
That workforce continues to grow alongside our region. Kootenai Health employs nearly 5,000 people, making it the largest employer in Kootenai County. Beyond Kootenai Health, hundreds of physicians, nurses, therapists, technicians, and support professionals work across clinics, specialty practices, long-term care facilities, and other healthcare organizations throughout our community. Together, they represent a significant and growing sector of our local economy.
"As North Idaho continues to grow, healthcare must grow with it," says Jameson Smith, CEO of Kootenai Health. "Our responsibility extends beyond treating illness. We are investing in the people, facilities, and services needed to support the health of our community for generations to come."
That commitment is reflected in projects like the Prairie Medical Campus in Post Falls, which will expand access to care and help meet the needs of one of the fastest-growing regions in Idaho. Investments like these create jobs, attract talent, and ensure residents can access high-quality care close to home.
Healthcare is one of the few industries that serves everyone while strengthening the local economy at the same time. Its impact can be measured not only in jobs and facilities, but also in healthier families, stronger businesses, and a more resilient community.
Behind every healthcare advancement, patient experience, and medical service are dedicated professionals working to improve lives every day. As Kootenai County continues to evolve, healthcare will remain an essential part of what makes this region a great place to live, work, and thrive.
