Prosecutors have filed multiple charges against a man accused of threatening his mother with a sword in Kalispell last month.  

Alecsander William Surynt, 35, faces counts of felony assault with a weapon and misdemeanor negligent arson in Flathead County District Court following his July 31 arrest. He is expected to appear before Judge Danni Coffman on Sept. 3 for his arraignment.  

Surynt remains in the county jail with bail set at $75,000. 

Kalispell Police officers met with Surynt's mother and her property manager for a trespassing call about 4:32 p.m., according to court documents. They had been dispatched to the apartment building earlier in the day for a welfare check and allegations that Surynt had been drinking and driving, court documents said.  

As Surynt allegedly "was causing problems" in the apartment, maintenance personnel were changing the locks. But Surynt had returned to the unit before they finished the job.  

Surynt's mother told the officers that he became aggressive, insulting her and spitting on her before drawing what was described as a long, curved Japanese sword from its sheath, court documents said. She accused him of raising it above his head as if he were preparing to strike her, court documents alleged.  

Surynt walked out of the apartment as the officers spoke with his mother. He ignored commands to stop and get on his knees, court documents said.  

"[Expletive] off," he allegedly told the police before heading back inside the apartment.  

After about a half an hour, Surynt reemerged from the unit. Officers then used what was described in court documents as less than lethal force to arrest him after he allegedly refused to cooperate with them.  

Heading into the apartment, officers found a smoke-filled room with burn marks on the carpet and a wooden closet door, court documents said. Investigators suspected that Surynt tried to start fire inside the building, according to court documents.  

They found a butane torch resting near an unsheathed katana-style sword, which was propped up against the wall, court documents said.  

Felony assault with a weapon is punishable by up to 20 years behind bars and a $50,000 fine. Misdemeanor negligent arson carries a maximum penalty of up to six months in the county jail and a $500 fine.
