PREP SOCCER: Ward's hat trick sends Timberlake past Charter girls for first regular season win over Panthers since 2016

SPIRIT LAKE — On Aug. 23, 2016, Timberlake defeated Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy in an Intermountain League match at Van Tuinstra Memorial Stadium. 

Since then, Coeur d’Alene Charter hadn’t lost in 96 league matches. 

Until Tuesday. 

Sophomore Lillee Ward recorded a hat trick for the Tigers, who beat the Panthers 3-2 at Timberlake High. 

Senior Ali Grantham had five saves for Timberlake (2-0, 2-0 IML), which travels to Priest River on Thursday. 

Paige Fish and Riley Green scored goals for Coeur d’Alene Charter (1-1, 1-1), which travels to Priest River on Friday. 

"We started slow and didn't really play to connect the first half, so we struggled to possess," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. "We fixed a few things at halftime and came out very strong in possession and had some very good looks at the goal, but just couldn't finish. I'm happy the girls never gave up. We had some strong leadership from Riley and Avery in the middle and Emily (Tanneberger) on the back line. Unfortunately for us, Timberlake, in particular Lillee Ward, capitalized on a few of our defensive errors and was able to finish what we gave them. This will sting for a bit but will hopefully be really motivating as we continue through the season."

RATHDRUM — Senior Olivia Smith notched a hat trick in the first 18 minutes for the Timberwolves in a nonleague win over the Hawks at Sunrise Rotary Field. 

Freshman Presley Moreau had two goals and an assist in the second half for Lake City (2-0), which hosts Timberline High of Boise on Friday. 

Lakeland (0-1-1) travels to Post Falls in a 5A Inland Empire League match on Thursday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Collin Rzepa scored four goals, three coming in the second half, for the Timberwolves in a nonleague win over the Hawks at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex at Lake City High. 

“After a tough loss to Sandpoint — a match we know we had every opportunity to tie or win — the boys responded exactly how we hoped,” said Lake City coach Chaz Donovan, whose team opened with a 3-2 home loss to Sandpoint on Saturday. “They went back to work, trusted the process and trusted each other. Today, they played unselfish, team-first soccer, and the result showed the quality of their effort.” 

Junior Cole Zlateff scored two goals for Lakeland (1-1), which led early in the match. 

“Lakeland’s speed caused problems early,” Donovan said.  “The first half was back-and-forth, but the second half our defense settled in, took control and allowed our attack to open the game up. I’m very proud of the body of work and the way the boys competed together.” 

“We had some great opportunities in the first half and could have scored in the first five or 10 minutes,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. “Defensively, we had two returning starters and we need to work on our positioning. We’re going to score some goals, but we’re going to give up a few as well.” 

Lake City (1-1) hosts Timberline High of Boise on Friday. 

Lakeland (1-1) hosts Timberlake next Tuesday.

LEWISTON — Sophomore striker Hudson Ryan scored on an assist from junior Cruz Andrich in the 65th minute to pull the Trojans within a goal, but the visitors fell short to the Bengals in a nonleague match at the P1FCU Sports Complex at Lewiston High. 

“We were controlling the match throughout,” Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. “We’ve got some young boys that sometimes have a hard time breaking down some speedy seniors. We had our opportunities and we put a screamer off the crossbar that would have tied it. It’s unfortunate, but we’ll learn from this one.” 

Post Falls (0-1) plays host to Sandpoint on Thursday.

Junior Jesper Giaever scored two goals for Coeur d’Alene Charter (2-0, 2-0 IML), which travels to Priest River on Friday. 

“This was a tough game to play,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Craig Daigle said. “Hard for our players to stay focused, but I think we did a good job. I’m glad we were able to get all of our players in the game and see some of our younger players get some quality time. We moved the ball around nicely.” 

Timberlake (0-2, 0-2) travels to Priest River on Thursday.
