PREP VOLLEYBALL: Post Falls wins in Cornett's debut as head coach

POST FALLS — Freshman Peyton Barclift had 16 kills and senior Teresa Smith added 12 as the Post Falls Trojans opened their season with a 25-21, 26-24, 25-21 victory over the Sandpoint Bulldogs on Tuesday night at The Arena. 

“It was a great first test for us,” said first-year Post Falls coach Casey Cornett, an assistant in the Trojans’ program the past four years. “Sandpoint is scrappy and challenged our middle defense, which made us earn every set. I loved how we hung tough in the tight moments. This gives us a great baseline to learn from as we keep dialing in our skills and building our team chemistry.” 

Lucy Carr had 24 assists and three aces for Post Falls. Malia Uemoto added 15 assists and eight digs, Rylie Gump four blocks, Khloe Neal two blocks, Jade Laos 10 digs and three aces. 

Sandpoint is 1-2. 

Post Falls plays at Lakeland on Thursday. 

Coeur d’Alene d. 

Lakeland 

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Jovie Le had 13 kills and the host Vikings and the Hawks went back and forth for four sets before Coeur d’Alene prevailed, 25-22, 25-20, 19-25, 25-13 at Viking Court. 

"Both teams had a lot of long rallies, with scrappy play,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “Lakeland had some middles that were giving us trouble early on, and we were able to make some adjustments. Jovie was very aggressive at the net.” 

Marly Sutich added seven kills and three blocks for Coeur d’Alene (9-1). Eva Callari had six kills and 10 digs, Hannah Shafer 21 assists, Emily Hackett 15 assists and three aces, Julianna Hasso three aces. 

"Our setters did a good job getting the ball to the pins, and also served aggressively tonight,” Curtis said. “And Eva provided good ball control.” 

Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said she was proud of the teamwork and resilience her team showed, battling a stomach bug that hit the team during its tournament in San Diego last weekend, and continued into Monday. 

"Coeur d’Alene played a scrappy game and did a great job picking up many of our hard hits,” Badger said. “They also served aggressively, which forced us to play a lot of balls out of system and challenged us to stay composed and find ways to score.” 

Junior Marissa Benson had 10 kills and 11 digs for Lakeland (3-3). Jolie Warren had 12 kills, Jaeli Hoffman 11 kills, 17 assists and three aces, Kindell Day 20 assists, Emma Beaty 20 digs, Anabel Bowie five blocks. 

“Marissa had an outstanding all-around performance, making an impact both at the net and in the back row,” Badger said. “Jaeli was dominant offensively, putting down some extremely hard and well-placed attacks. Overall, it was a great team effort and a strong example of our ability to battle and compete together.” 

On Thursday, Lakeland plays host to Post Falls, and Coeur d’Alene visits Sandpoint.  

Lake City d. 

Moscow 

MOSCOW — Senior Kate Moglia totaled 24 assists and six digs and the visiting Timberwolves held the Bears to one point in the second set of a 25-16, 25-1, 25-13 victory at Bear Den. 

Camryn Woodman added 13 kills for Lake City (2-0), and Alaina Freed had nine kills and three blocks. 

“We had an opportunity to work on our offensive scheme tonight and the girls rose to the challenge,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “Our middles (Alaina and Lexie Burns) are working hard. Nice to knock down a road win early.” 

Moscow is 0-2. 

Lake City returns to action next Tuesday at home vs. Lewiston.  

Kellogg d. 

Grangeville 

GRANGEVILLE — Junior Ella Yrjana had 20 assists, five kills and two aces as the visiting Bulldogs opened Central Idaho League play with a 25-15, 25-10, 26-24 victory over the Bulldogs. 

Paige Yrjana added nine kills and nine digs for Kellogg, Gretah Angle had eight kills and three aces, Jordyn Stutzke 10 digs, Bella Schillereff eight digs. Freshman Valynn Visintainer was 100 percent on 14 serves. 

“We played great for our first match,” Kellogg coach Hollie Yrjana said. “Lost our intensity and focus for a short bit in the last set, but battled back to take the win. I'm proud of the girls for not playing scared when things didn't go our way, and continuing to compete when we were down. Overall, it was a great start.” 

Kellogg is scheduled to travel to Bonners Ferry tonight. 

Coeur du Christ d. 

Lakeside 

PLUMMER — Sophomore Espi Klocko had 21 digs as the visiting Saints beat the Knights 25-21, 25-17, 25-16 in nonleague play at Ron Miller Court. 

Savannah Sloan added eight kills, Therese Junkin 15 assists for Coeur du Christ (2-0), which travels to Wallace on Thursday. 

“Girls are doing great; watch out for this team this season,” Saints coach Mason Trevena said. 

It was the season opener for Lakeside, which visits Clark Fork on Thursday.

Kootenai Classical

POST FALLS — The host Kodiaks, in their final year as an associate member before joining the Idaho High School Activities Association next fall as a full member, dropped their season opener to the Wampus Cats 25-16, 25-18, 21-25, 25-21.

Next up on the schedule for Kootenai Classical Academy is a match at Kootenai High next Tuesday.

ST. MARIES — The host Lumberjacks opened their season with a 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 19-25, 15-4 victory over the Miners (1-1).
