NIC President Swayne co-authors book on experiential learning

North Idaho College President Nick Swayne is among eight higher education professionals who co-authored a book on experiential learning, a process where students gain knowledge and skills through real-world tasks and hands-on experience.

“Leading Experiential Learning on Campus,” released July 1, provides strategies for creating experiential learning ecosystems and helping colleges develop, improve and sustain experiential learning programs.

Swayne said his work with experiential learning spans more than a decade, including developing programs, researching best practices and studying their impact on students.. That work continued at NIC, where the college is working to integrate experiential learning with career and technical education, workforce training and transfer programs.

“I’m very proud of the work that went into this book,” Swayne said. “This learning model has proven to be exceptional and we’re seeing students really value their experience.”

Swayne said the goal of the book is to help institutions make experiential learning an intentional part of their educational model rather than an isolated program.
