Coeur d’Alene Charter 1, Bonners Ferry 0 

COEUR d’ALENE — Opening the year against the reigning 4A state champions, Coeur d’Alene Charter, is no easy task, but it was one that the Bonners Ferry High boys soccer team wanted to take on last Saturday. 

The Badgers were looking for revenge after the Panthers knocked them off twice last year and looked like they might get their chance. After the first half, the two teams remained scoreless thanks to quality keeping from senior Kordale Burt and defense from the Badgers' back end of freshman Jackson Chavira, senior Ben Middleton, senior Peyton Hinthorn and sophomore Myles McCulla. 

Bonners Ferry head coach Matt Solis said his backline played a near-perfect game, while the offense adjusted to a new tactic.  

However, it was only a matter of time before Coeur d’Alene Charter found the back of the net. In the middle of the second half, the Panthers caught the Badgers’ defense sleeping and got a run toward the net where junior Brooks Judd smashed a pass from Cooper Hermes off the crossbar and into the goal to give CDAC the lead. 

“We fell asleep on a quick throw-in, and that’s what Charter does—they get an opportunity and don’t think twice about it,” Solis said.  

While down, the Bonners Ferry boys didn’t relent, finding an opportunity for a game-tying goal in the 75th minute. Senior Riley Beggarly took the ball down the field, found an opening and powered up a shot of his own that doinked off the crossbar and out. 

“Sometimes, that’s just how the game goes,” Solis said. 

The Badgers dropped to 0-1 on the year with another loss to CDAC; however, Solis said he wasn't not concerned about the loss. 

“This is just a small setback,” Solis said. “We’ll learn from it, get back to work, and continue chasing the ultimate goal. I’m excited for the week ahead and ready to see how these boys respond.” 

Bonners Ferry 13, St. Maries 0 

BONNERS FERRY — Head coach Matt Solis was right to be excited about how the Badgers would respond to the loss as they crushed St. Maries 13-0 on Monday night in their home opener. 

Senior Riley Beggarly got the party started, finding the net within the first minute, and Bonners Ferry wasn’t settled. What followed was a parade of Badger goals, including four from senior Trevor Festini and three from Aaron Tadlock, as Bonners Ferry routed their fellow 4A school.  

“A great team win and exactly the response we were looking for,” Solis said. “Proud of the boys.” 

Tadlock added three assists to his stat sheet as Bonners Ferry’s sophomores Miles Oxford, Myles McCulla and senior Maddox Sherraden all found the back of the net. The Badgers even saw two freshmen, James Cederquist and Oliver Hartman, score for the first time in their young careers. 

The Badgers’ boys will be back in action on Friday against Stillwater at home. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. 

GIRLS 

Coeur d’Alene Charter 3, Bonners Ferry 0 

COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene Charter Panthers notched two goals in the second half to put the Bonners Ferry Badgers away 3-0 on Saturday. 

The Badgers were shorthanded due to players needing 10 practices to play in games, leaving them with limited subs on a sweltering day, Bonners Ferry head coach Emily Winebark said. Though the team fell, Winebark said the game was a fantastic showcase for the younger players on the squad. 

“I was just really impressed with everyone's work ethic, because it was hot, and those were not easy games,” Winebark said. 

Senior Sierra Shepard scored two goals for the Panthers and assisted the other goal, scored by sophomore Avery Thompson. The Badgers will play against the Panthers again on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. at home. 

Bonners Ferry 4, St. Maries 1 

BONNERS FERRY — The Bonners Ferry Badgers were able to respond in full force against the St. Maries Lumberjacks on Monday afternoon, getting back to an even 1-1 record. 

Bonners Ferry was led by a pair of juniors, Lil Therrien and Marley Pauls, who both scored two goals each. Freshman Madison DesMarais notched one assist and has become a breakout star for Winebark’s Badgers early this season. 

“Even though she's catching up in that skill, she is really reliable,” Winebark said of DesMarais. “I can kind of, again, kind of put her anywhere and know that she won't get tired and know that she'll do her absolute best and work super hard.” 

The Lady Badgers will head down to Sandpoint for their next game on Aug. 27 with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
