Owyhee 7, Sandpoint 0 

SANDPOINT — The Lady Bulldogs battled through injuries in their season-opening game hosting 6A Owyhee at War Memorial Field, ultimately falling 7-0 on Saturday afternoon. 

The Storm jumped out to a four-goal lead in the first half and scored three in the second to round out the game. Without star goalkeeper Izzy Stark, who is recovering from a leg injury, Sandpoint started senior Jordyn Tomco. 

Bulldogs head coach Alan Brinkmeier said it was Tomco’s first start in goal since she was 8 years old, and she played an outstanding game. Brinkmeier said junior Willow Betz held down the team’s backline while senior Bayah Ratigan did everything she could in the midfield to generate an offensive attack. 

In the second half, Brinkmeier said Sandpoint finished the game with 10 players on the field due to injuries. 

“Even though it's a loss, games like this, we can still build off of,” Brinkmeier said. 

Moscow 4, Sandpoint 1 

MOSCOW — A second-half surge from the reigning state champion Moscow Bears moved them past the Sandpoint Bulldogs 4-1 in a 5A Inland Empire matchup on Tuesday afternoon at the Moscow School District Community Playfields. 

The Bulldogs’ Rae Olson scored the team’s first goal of the season in the 58th minute of the game. However, it was too little too late as the Bears had already scored four goals, three in the second half, allowing them to seal the victory. The Bears outshot the Bulldogs 35 to four, according to the Moscow-Pullman Daily News.

Sandpoint gave Marlee Stevens the nod between the posts, and she stepped up. Stevens made 11 saves in the game, according to the Moscow-Pullman Daily News.

Sandpoint falls to 0-2 on the season and will look to get back on the right track against Bonners Ferry at War Memorial Field on Thursday, Aug. 27. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
