As we grow older our body changes, including our brain. We may notice we do not recall information as well as we once did, misplace things or forget to pay a bill.

These are usually signs of mild forgetfulness, and not serious. Serious memory problems make it hard to do everyday activities, such as driving, using the phone and finding your way home.

Signs that one should talk about with their doctor include: Repeating and asking the same questions over and over again; getting lost in places you know well; having trouble following recipes or directions; becoming confused about time, people or places; and not taking care of yourself – not bathing, eating poorly or behaving unsafely.

You doctor can perform tests and assessments to determine the source of memory problems and if necessary make a referral to a neurologist. (“Memory Problems, Forgetfulness, and Aging,” November 2023, National Institute on Aging website, nia.gov)
