Whitefish City Council approved a grant of $250,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Flathead Valley to fund the purchase of a second lot on Whitefish Avenue to build two more three-bedroom townhouses.

The lot adjoins the property Habitat Flathead bought a few months ago with the first installment of the city's funds.

"It is a little bit larger lot, so it will provide two townhomes but also park space for those four townhomes," Whitefish City Manager Dana Meeker said. "We do have $814,000 available for programs and projects for fiscal year 2027, so the $250,000 [would] easily fit within the current budget."

The money comes from the resort tax fund and the decision to purchase the lot was supported by city staff.

The same requirements in the agreement for the first lot apply. The townhomes will be for households at or below 80% area median income, the project will be completed in two years and Habitat will provide annual progress reports. The city has the ability to audit the project's financial records.

Habitat Flathead is taking applications on the townhouses until Oct. 31 and plans to have the four townhomes on Whitefish Avenue move-in ready by June 30, 2027.
