The Freedom Riders LoD Libby chapter recently held a poker run to help a local veteran in need.

Earlier this month, Saturday, Aug. 1, the chapter held a charity poker run, raising $9,000 for Michael Connors. 

The 42-year-old Montana native served his country in the U.S. Navy for 6 1/2 years, according to information from the Libby chapter.

The father of three endured the loss of a son nearly 20 years and is now battling Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). It is the most common autonomic nervous system disorder. 

“Thanks to all riders who joined us, the businesses who donated, and all the volunteers who assisted in the ride,” chapter member Heather Robertson said. “This will help with primarily travel expenses, which is considerable with the cost of air travel and gas.”

The run began and ended at the VFW in Libby with stops at Happy’s Inn and the Riverbend Restaurant. Part of the fundraising included a 50-50 raffle and a live auction. The Libby chapter was joined by other area chapters in Northwest Montana and North Idaho.

Connors joined the Navy in 2009, "searching for purpose and wanting to support his family." He served aboard the USS Ohio submarine as a Machinist’s Mate. Following his service, Connors worked in corrections in Charleston, South Carolina and in 2015, he began experiencing severe lower back pain. It led to his medial retirement in November.

Connors said in the message shared by the Libby chapter that he received many diagnoses, prescribed medications nearly took his life twice. In 2021, following a MRI of his neck, Connors said he has endured extensive physical therapy, medical treatments and numerous procedures.

The Veterans Administration in Salt Lake City diagnosed him with POTS and he continues to suffer from chronic neck pain, passing-out spells, tachycardia and bradycardia.

He said he needs spinal fusion surgery and has dealt with surgeries and travel claims being denied.
