NIC SOCCER: Cardinal women break through late

RIVERTON, Wyo. — If North Idaho College women’s soccer coach Luke Babson has learned one thing in his three matches at the helm, it’s that he’s got a resilient bunch of players. 

Hannah Rommes, a sophomore midfielder from Grants Pass, Ore., scored the go-ahead goal on an assist from freshman Halli Wright of Brigham City, Utah, in the 80th minute as the Cardinals defeated Central Wyoming College 4-3 in a nonconference match at Riverton High School. 

“Halli made a good pass and Hannah was able to get a shot off her left foot,” Babson said. “It was a good finish.” 

White scored two goals for NIC (2-1), which travels to Laramie County Community College of Cheyenne, Wyo., on Saturday. 

“We’ve had some heavy travel and we’re trying to teach them to travel smart to get results,” said Babson, whose team trailed 2-1 at halftime. “We got down early in the game, but it’s a strong group and we’re capable of scoring against teams. We never feel like we’re out of a game.”

RIVERTON, Wyo. — Caden Pennock, a freshman from San Diego, tied the match in the 19th minute for the Cardinals in a nonconference draw with the Rustlers at Riverton High School. 

“We played really well,” NIC coach Brad Williams said. “We had a lot of shots that hit the crossbar, hit the post and their keeper save it. We struggled to find the net a little bit, but I’m encouraged with the play we’ve had and I think it’s going to fall our way soon.” 

NIC (3-0-1) travels to Laramie County on Saturday.
