It was an old-fashioned slobber knocker Friday evening as Glacier and Billings West met in a rematch of November's AA state title game at Legends Stadium.
In the end the Golden Bears got their revenge, stopping Glacier at the goal line in overtime to claim a 6-3 victory.
"I'm very proud of our boys effort," acting Glacier head coach Jareth Wilson — who is filling in for the suspended Grady Bennett — said. "I'm very proud of the way they competed, we knew it was going to be a tough battle and it was every bit the battle that we thought it would be."
In overtime, West (1-0) took the ball first and worked the ball down to the four before settling for a 21-yard Jaxon King field goal to go up 6-3.
Glacier (0-1) then took possession and ran Trey Ramey up the middle for 6 yards, but a loss on second down and an incompletion on third made it decision time for the Wolfpack.
Wilson chose to go for the win.
Cash Keim rushed the offense to the line and snapped the ball quick. He threw a quick screen to the far side of the field, but West held its ground and stopped Glacier at the 1.
"I think our operation was maybe a little off, you get into those moments of the game and its loud and things get a little rushed, but we felt good about the play call," Wilson said.
While neither team found the end zone, both had opportunities.
Start with the Wolfpack — who started the junior Keim at quarterback — working their way into Billings West territory multiple times in the first quarter but coming up empty on all fronts.
First, the Golden Bears forced a turnover on downs on the opening possession. Next time Glacier had the ball, Keim was intercepted by Walker Olson in the end zone.
Glacier's defense held strong for most of the game; Billings West didn't snap the ball on the Glacier side of the field until the fourth quarter.
After a scoreless first half, Glacier broke the deadlock in the third as Ty Sherrill split the uprights with a 30-yard field goal to make it 3-0.
After Glacier got a quick stop, Keim looked for the home run ball but was intercepted again as Caleb Durand ripped the ball away to force the turnover.
That set up the Golden Bears' best drive of the day.
Paeten Swain had catches of 20 and 24 yards as West worked across midfield and down to the Glacier 3-yard line.
The Wolfpack bent but didn't break.
Matthew Ahner swallowed up Tyreke Jones for a loss of two, then the Wolfpack forced two incompletions from Seth Williamson. That set up King for a chip-shot 22-yarder, which he nailed.
"I'm very proud of the way the defense flew around tonight," Wilson said. "I thought in the box we did a good job, but I think our tackling can improve and that is an area we are going to focus on."
Glacier worked the ball across midfield in the closing minutes but couldn't get in range for Sherrill as the game went to overtime.
Glacier now heads to Bozeman to battle the Hawks Friday at 6 p.m.
