SANDPOINT — Bonner and Boundary counties have been placed on Stage 2 fire restrictions following a recent wildfire spread and dry conditions that have been sweeping the two northern counties, Idaho Department of Land officials said in a Friday morning announcement.  

Bonner County Sheriff’s Office shared the news in a Friday morning Nixle alert, reminding residents that the restrictions, originally put in place early August, remain in effect because of increased fire activity.  

According to IDL officials, fire restrictions are based on area conditions and become more restrictive with each stage increase. If conditions continue to worsen, officials said a forest closure may occur, where the public will be unable to enter national forest boundaries until the applicable fire danger lessens.  

Under Stage 2, only fires fueled solely by liquid petroleum or LPG fuels are permitted. Propane campfires are allowed if used in an area clear of flammable items. Any other fires, via campfire or charcoal, are prohibited.  

Smoking is only allowed while in a stagnant area at least three feet in diameter, cleared or barren of flammable materials.  

Officials also said that operating a motorized vehicle off designated roads and trails is prohibited, and that chainsaws and other equipment are not permitted between 1 p.m. and 1 a.m. Other banned equipment includes items powered by an internal combustion engine; blasting, welding, or other activities that generate flame or flammable material. 

“The number one reason for restrictions is to protect human life, property and our natural resources. The smallest spark can turn our dry forests into a dangerous wildfire that can threaten lives, homes and property,” officials said.  

Restrictions are based on fire preventability, with officials noting that nine out of 10 fires can be mitigated by simple safety practices.
