PREP SOCCER: Wise helps Vikings complete weekend sweep of southern Idaho schools

COEUR d’ALENE — Junior Blake Wise scored two goals, including the go-ahead tally in the 59th minute, as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings completed a weekend sweep of 6A Southern Idaho Conference schools with a 3-1 victory over the Timberline Wolves of Boise on Saturday at Viking Field. 

Coeur d’Alene defeated Rocky Mountain of Meridian 3-0 on Friday. 

"I’ve got a big smile on my face,” Coeur d’Alene coach Robbie Harmelink said. “To see our team execute two days in a row, stick with the mindset of playing for each other. It's nice to come out and make a statement about the Coeur d’Alene Viking team this year.” 

Wise opened the scoring with a left-footed shot off the bottom of the crossbar in the 21st minute. In the second half, he corralled a loose ball and fired a shot to the keeper’s right that kissed the post and glanced in in the 59th minute. 

“Both of Blake’s goals were what we call in the soccer world ‘bangers,’” Harmelink said. “This kid is playing so well; he was doing so well in the summer, and it’s cool to see him carry over into games.” 

Blake Johnson capped the scoring in the 79th minute for Coeur d’Alene (3-0-0), which plays host to Lewiston on Thursday. 

Timberline, which beat Lake City 2-1 on Friday, is 2-2.

LAKE CITY — Sophomore Collin Rzepa scored two second half goals for the Timberwolves in a nonleague win over the Grizzlies of Meridian at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex at Lake City High. 

Junior Sebatian Guitron had 10 saves and junior Cale Hanners scored in the first half for Lake City (2-2). 

“This group of young men continues to learn, adapt and find solutions to whatever is thrown at them,” Lake City coach Chaz Donovan said. “Rocky Mountain is a quality opponent and created several chances, but our defense today was outstanding and absorbed the pressure with composure.” 

Lake City travels to Lewiston on Tuesday. 

Rocky Mountain is 1-2-1.

POST FALLS — Junior Brooks Judd had a hat trick and added an assist for the Panthers in an Intermountain League win over the Lumberjacks at The Fields at Real Life.

Sophomore Jacob Poncato and junior Raul Crem dos Santos Sandim also added goals for Coeur d’Alene Charter (4-0, 4-0 IML), which faces Sandpoint on Wednesday at The Fields. 

“It was good to see Jacob and Raul get their first high school goals,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Craig Daigle said. “I was happy to see us move the ball around and be unselfish.”

COEUR d’ALENE — Lake City coach Matt Ruchti wanted to see how his team was going to respond following a 3-1 setback to Timberline of Boise on Friday. 

The result was pretty good if you ask him. 

Senior Nell Hutchins, senior Olivia Smith and junior Phinalley Voigt scored goals in the first half as the Timberwolves blanked the Grizzlies of Meridian in a nonleague match at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex at Lake City High. 

“Our goal today was to have a better mentality,” Ruchti said. “We didn’t play our style and mentality on Friday and I wanted to see how we’d respond against another great program. I think the girls were disappointed with the result against Timberline and came out and played much better today, and the scoreline represented that.” 

Senior Savvy Spencer had eight saves for Lake City (3-1), which hosts Ridgeline of Liberty Lake on Thursday. 

Rocky Mountain is 4-1.

COEUR d’ALENE — The Vikings had their chances late, but were unable to push across the equalizer, falling to the Wolves of Boise in a nonleague game at Coeur d’Alene High. 

“Timberline’s the No. 1 team in the state and our girls are learning a new system,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “I’m super proud of the girls. We made it tough to get toward the goal. We’re going through a learning process, but the girls are picking it up really well.” 

Anika Callender scored in the seventh minute for Timberline (5-0), which beat Lake City 3-1 on Friday. 

Coeur d’Alene (1-2) plays Gonzaga Prep in Spokane on Thursday. 

“We had some good chances to go up or ahead on Friday (against Rocky Mountain),” Vredenburg said. “Today’s result shows we can compete against those tough teams. This really gives us a good starting point on where we are and want to go.”

"We connected well through the middle,” Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “Lots of attempts toward goal early, but it took a while to get our footing. Overall a solid performance by all 21 players who had time on the field today.”
