Family-owned and budget-friendly

COEUR d’ALENE — These days, people often look to online retailers for budget-friendly furniture.

That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re satisfied with what they get.

“We are consistently hearing from customers that once they receive it, they are not satisfied with the product,” said Luke Thompson, a manager and design team member with Hayden Furniture Depot.

Attention to quality and customer service has allowed Hayden Furniture Depot — owned and operated by the Thompson family — to thrive at 310 W. Haycraft Ave. over the past seven years.

Now, the Thompsons are looking to bridge the gap between quality and affordability at their new 8,000-square-foot showroom, called Furniture Now.

Furniture Now opens Tuesday at 2267 W. Appleway Ave. in the former Tuesday Morning space and, conveniently, just behind Hayden Furniture Depot’s flagship showroom.

Customers can expect a wide selection of new, name-brand furniture at a discount price.

“That’s what I’m looking forward to the most — satisfying customers at this price range where, before, there really was this big gap,” Thompson said.

Every piece in the Furniture Now showroom will be take-home ready, he added.

“We think it’s really important for customers to ‘see, feel, touch,’ the furniture,” Thompson said. “At Furniture Now, if it’s on the floor you can buy it — not only that, you can take it home that day.”

Even before the rise of online furniture retailers, the Thompsons saw the demand for discount pieces firsthand.

Luke’s parents, Steve and Debbie Thompson, broke into the retail world in the late 2000s with two thrift store locations, called Coeur d’Alene Exchange.

And while the mission behind the stores was to benefit area educators, the Thompsons also noted a strong demand for refurbished furniture.

Over time, Coeur d’Alene Exchange evolved into Hayden Furniture Depot, offering refurbished “shabby chic” furniture until they were able to secure their first supplier, then another.

“At that point, we became real players in the furniture competition around us,” Thompson said.

Hayden Furniture Depot has remained a family business through every change and expansion, with Luke and his three siblings running things day-to-day.

Their focus has always been and will continue to be excellent customer service.

“Now we’re taking that family ethos and plugging it into a new market,” Thompson said.

Furniture Now will be offering discounts to celebrate its soft grand opening ahead of a larger grand opening sale in March.
