Norman Nelson

Born and raised in Whitefish, Norm was a lifelong member of the community he loved. Whitefish wasn't just where he lived, it was where his roots ran deep, where friendships were formed over decades, and where he remained actively engaged well into his later years.

Family and friendships mattered most to Norm. After the passing of the love of his life, Arleen Nelson, in 2008, he carried her memory with him for the next 18 years, continuing to show up for his family and community with quiet strength, intelligence and loyalty.

Norm possessed a sharp mind and had many amazing ideas that are probably still hidden on napkins somewhere! He was quick witted with a fantastic sense of humor that was dry, warm and perfectly timed. And his self-deprecating Charlie Brown type of humor somehow managed to be incredibly endearing. His intelligence and creativity were matched by a strong entrepreneurial spirit that found expression throughout his life. His artistic talent left a lasting mark on the community — most notably through the design of the Whitefish Lake Golf Club logo, a legacy still visible today.

In 2018, Norm partnered with his daughter, Carrie (Nelson) Gendron, in real estate at Whitefish Realty, a collaboration that became a meaningful chapter in both their lives and a special bond they shared.

He was also well known for his involvement in local pool leagues and tournaments, where camaraderie and friendly competition brought him great joy. In addition, Norm was proud to be one of the oldest golfing members at the Whitefish Lake Golf Club, a place that reflected his love of the game, challenge, and mostly, connection with others.

He is survived by his three children, Craig A. Nelson, Kevin S. Nelson and Carrie Jo (Nelson) Gendron and their families.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 at Christ Lutheran Church in Whitefish. Please join us as we remember and honor him!

Norm's life was defined by creativity, humor, intelligence and connection to his family, friends, and the community he helped shape. He lived simply and fully with kindness and intentionality, and he will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him. Take care, Norm. You were deeply loved.
