Million Dollar 1968 Expansion Program For Dupuis Lumber Mill Is Announced

Approval for a $1 million expansion program at the 1968 was announced by Steve DeMers, Assistant to the President of the Pack River Co., at the meeting of the Polson Rotary Club on Tuesday. 

Part of the expansion program already is underway, he said. Planned are additions of six dry kilns, two large boilers, new fuel bins, a horizontal re-saw unit, a planer and a replacement for the present debarker. The kilns and boiler facilities are projects now underway. 

DeMers also reported that Pack River is continuing negotiations with United States Plywood Corp. for the purchase of the plywood mill at Polson. If successful, DeMers said Pack River would operate the mill. U.S. Plywood closed down the operation on Nov. 1. 

Three shifts are now running at the Dupuis mill, and some 170 men are employed, exclusive of the woods personnel. 

DeMers, who is a candidate for one of the two Republican nominations for state representative, outlines his thoughts on industrial development in the Flathead Valley. 

He said that the aircraft industry is reported to be considering the possibilities of establishing plants in the valley where component parts to aircraft would be made. He said that the plastics industry is plants in the general area. 

He pointed out, however, that no installation would be established in disinterested communities. Necessary to attract industry are several factors, including the availability of land, housing, schools and a good business climate. PHS Wrestlers Win Own Tournament

The Polson Pirate wrestling team came out on top of the four-team tourney, which ended Saturday night. 

The Polson team scored 102 points, Eureka was second with 76, Corvallis was third with 38, and Stevensville had 36. This was the first Invitational tournament sponsored by the local Athletic Booster Club.

Tribal Committees and Assignments Announced

Committee responsibilities and assignments have been announced by the Confederated Tribes of the Salish and Kootenai.

The community services committee is charged with the responsibility of developing and implementing all tribal operations as they concern education, welfare, health and law and order. Fred Whitworth is chairman, Patrick Lefthand, vice chairman and Leo Sias and Floyd Nicolai.

The Economic Development Committee is charged with developing and implementing all tribal operations and enterprises as they concern the Overall Economic Development Program and national resources, including fish and game.

Chairman is Patrick Lefthand, vice chairman, Nicolai, Robert A. McCrea and Archie McDonald.

The administration committee serves as the instrument of tribal government responsible for budget, personnel, property acquisition, utilization and disposal, enterprises and other administrative responsibilities. Alvin E. Sloan is chairman, E.W. Morigeau, vice chairman, Whitworth and William J. Ey, Jr.

The Overall Economic Development and Planning Committee is in charge of long-range planning for the economic development of the reservation. Members of the committee serve on the governing board of the community action program.

The chairman is McCrea, the vice chairman is Morigeau, Sias, and McDonald. The National Congress of American Indians committee on the national level works to secure for Indians rights and benefits to which they are entitled under U.S. and state law …
