Michael 'Mike' Tompkins, 78

Mike was born on May 16, 1947, in Bonners Ferry Community Hospital, to parents Eugene (Pidge) Tompkins and Kathryn Parshall Tompkins. After an extended illness, Mike passed away on January 28, 2026.

Mike married Sandra Helgerson on November 30, 1968, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. After nine years of marriage, their dream of having a family was realized when they adopted their son Rob, born in 1977. Next came daughter, Lindsey, born in 1980. The family Mike and Sandy always wanted was finally complete. 

Mike worked at several different jobs — General Feed & Grain, BNRR, hauled pipe for Dunn Brothers out of Texas, but the job he always wanted to do was hauling logs, which he did for 45 years, until health problems forced him to retire on September 30, 2014.

Preceding Mike in death are his parents; grandparents, Hyrstal and Opal Tompkins and Frank and Irene Parshall;  newborn brother, Stephen Tompkins; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol and David Stegner of Clarkston, Wash., and Therese and Larry Anderson of Anaheim, Calif.; sister-in-law, Linda (Helgerson) English; and father-in-law Robert (Bob) Helgerson.

Mike is survived by his wife, Sandy; son, Rob Tompkins (Anne) of Bonners Ferry; daughter, Lindsey Tompkins of Cheyenne, Wyo.; grandkids, Ben Tompkins, U.S. Army, and Emma Tompkins (Joey) of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; mother-in-law, Mary Helgerson of Moyie Springs; sisters-in-law, Bobbi Helgerson of Moyie Springs and Tammi Schierman of Coeur d’Alene; brother-in-law Rick, Helgerson (Jeanette) of Camp Verde, Ariz.; and cousins, Linda Case of Bonners Ferry and Judy Sandstrom of Spokane Valley, Wash.
