The Libby Greenchain wrestling squad doesn’t get to enjoy a lot of home cooking in the course of a season, but Tuesday, it feasted on two dual opponents while celebrating its senior class and the Little Guy program.
Libby hammered the Polson Pirates, 66-9, and the Bonners Ferry Badgers, 70-12. Bonus points were the norm for the Greenchain as they piled up the pins and technical falls.
One dozen senior class members of the team were honored while being presented with their family members and loved ones.
They included Bridger Bache, Jeremiah Thomas, Gabe Kosters, Boe Miles, Urijah Bache, Tanner Wolfe, Ian Thom, Brysen Miller, Hunter Nelson, girls team member Isabella Barnes as well as managers Payton Anderson and Gracie Meyers.
The marathon evening also saw Columbia Falls join the fray. In addition to Barnes taking the mat, junior Meghan Connelley also wrestled.
The Greenchain Gorillas then joined the varsity in the circle. A parents meeting was held earlier and the youngsters will begin practice Feb. 23 with their first match Feb. 28 at Eureka. The Kootenai Klassic in Libby will be March 7 and the state tournament in Polson will be held April 3-4.
Against the Pirates, freshman Barrett Moe opened with a forfeit win at 103 pounds, then sophomore Levi Nick stuck Dawson Nash in 1:41 at 110 to make it 12-0.
118-pounder Bridger Bache trailed Wyatt Moldenhauer 3-0 before rallying to take a 5-3 after two periods. One more takedown led to Bache pinning his opponent for an 18-0 Libby lead.
After Damon Anderson’s 6-1 loss to Zanen Piapot at 126, Libby won the next seven matches for a 55-3 lead.
Thomas blanked Polson’s Logan Clairmont, 16-0, in 2:44 at 132 pounds, then Maddux Stow scored a quick fall in 1:36 over Jaspin Fisher at 144.
Tristan DeShazer followed with pin in 67 seconds of Loui Mohr at 150. Boe Miles only needed 100 seconds to tech fall Jaidon Mahkuk, 19-3, at 157. In the 165-pound match, junior Alex Reatz scored a first-period takedown to lead 3-0 before Gabriel Houston’s third-period takedown tied it at 3-3. But Reatz responded with an escape and a takedown to secure a 7-3 win.
At 175, Hunter Rooney scored first before Polson’s Ryatt Maley took a 4-3 lead to the second period. But Rooney reversed the Pirate early in the second and decked him a few seconds later to make it 55-3.
Brysen Miller lost at 190, but Thom got the Greenchain back on the winning track with a pin of Damien Kato in 1:03 at 215. Nelson got a forfeit at 285 to set the final score.
Against Bonners, the Badgers only fielded wrestlers in half the weight classes - seven.
After the Greenchain claimed forfeit wins in the first four matches, Thomas scored a pin in 36 seconds at 132 pounds. Stow followed with a pin at 138.
Bridger Moe suffered a loss at 144 before DeShazer rallied with a fall at 150. Miles and Reatz each had forfeit wins in the next two matches.
Badger 175-pounder Gaige Johnson led Rooney 4-3 after one period, but the Logger dominated the rest of the match in a 19-7 win.
Thom needed 61 seconds to stick Rocky Monroe at 190. Miller won by forfeit at 215, then Nelson was beaten in the last match of the night.
Libby will wrestle this weekend in Eureka at the Buzz Lucey Tournament.
Then the postseason begins with the Class A Western Divisional Tournament in Dillon Feb. 13-14. The state championships are the following weekend in Billings, Feb. 19-21.
