PULLMAN — Charley-Rain Olpin (12) was named the High Point Award winner for the girls' 11-12 age division, which highlighted another successful outing for the Sandpoint Sharks at the Cougar Winter Open held Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at Washington State University's Gibb Pool.
Olpin placed first in the 200-yard IM (2:29.27), 100 fly (1:13.34), 200 free (2:12.22), and the 50 back (32.72), second in the 100 free (1:00.05), 100 back (1:11.91), 50 free (27.76), and the mixed 500 free (5:45.65), and third in the 50 fly (30.78) and 100 IM (1:11.47) for a total of 76 total points across the two-day event.
Vienne LaFountain (12) was fourth out of 22 in the 50 breast (40.20), fifth out of 17 in the 200 IM (2:41.50), sixth out of 21 in the 50 back (36.32), and sixth out of 28 in the 50 free (30.06). Noelle Altemus (11) also competed in the 11-12 girls age division for the Sharks.
"Our 12-and-under swimmers raced hard and showed great speed," Sandpoint Sharks head coach Emily Renzini said. "Noelle only started swimming in September and is already competing confidently and diving off the blocks. You would never guess it was her first meet by the way she attacked her races."
Alivia Storms (14) also medaled a handful of times for the Sharks, finishing first in the 100 breast (1:18.16) and the 200 breast (2:51.65), second in the 200 IM (2:30.56) and the 200 back (2:30.62), and third in the 100 back (1:11.11) and the 50 free (28.59) in the 13-14 girls age division.
"Alivia had a very strong meet and came ready to race," coach Renzini noted. "I love watching her swim because she hates to lose, and you can see that competitive fire every time she’s in the water."
Competing in the 15-and-over boys age division, Lou Foust and Andrew Ford impressed once again. Foust was first in the 500 free (5:27.86), second in the 200 back (2:11.83), and third in the 200 free (2:04.53) while Ford was second in both the 500 free (5:36.63) and the 200 breast (2:25.37), and third in the 100 breast (1:05.71).
"Lou and Andrew are coming off a great meet a couple weekends ago, and swimming this fast again tells me they’re ready for our championship meet in a few weeks," coach Renzini added. "They had back-to-back events with very little rest and still raced hard."
