COEUR d’ALENE — Caden Symons tweaked his ankle on the first play of Thursday’s game vs. Sandpoint, and hobbled over to the Coeur d’Alene bench.
He returned a few moments later, and made the visiting Bulldogs feel the pain.
“He just tightened his laces and got us 41,” Coeur d’Alene coach Kent Leiss said.
Symons, who has signed with Evansville, scored 27 of his 43 points in the second half, and 6A Coeur d’Alene (7-12) overcame a 15-point first-half deficit to beat 5A Sandpoint 70-65 at Viking Court.
"We had a very poor second quarter. Poor shot selection and poor defense,” said Leiss, whose team trailed 36-21 late in the first half. "We challenged our kids at the half to play harder, defend better and take better shots.”
Leiss said Viking junior Tannar Stern was “outstanding on defense,” holding Sandpoint’s 6-foot-9 Logan Roos to nine points — none in the second half.
“We held them to 15 points in the first 13 minutes of the second half. That was the difference,” Leiss said.
Rylan Braga added 13 points for Coeur d’Alene, which took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter on a three-point play by Symons, who hit seven 3-pointers.
Junior Brock Yarbrough for Sandpoint (8-9), which lost 76-75 at home to Coeur d’Alene last Thursday. Junior Derrick Chamberlain added 14 points for the Bulldogs.
Coeur d’Alene heads to Missoula to play Big Sky on Saturday.
