If line dance lessons down at the local shooting range don’t say country to you, then I don’t know what does?
Starting Saturday, Feb. 21, the Mineral County Shooting Sports facility at Lozeau will host a different kind of Montana pastime, country line dance lessons and open dancing. From 6-8 p.m., anyone 16 years and older can come toe tap the night away.
Line dancing is a choreographed dance in which a group of people follow along to a repeating sequence of steps while arranged in one or more lines or rows. No partners needed, and it works great for a group of friends.
Traci Miller, a recent transplant from Sacramento with decades of various dance expertise, will be the instructor. She shared, “I have always loved dance, my mom was a great dancer, and as a teen, I learned clogging, I did that for ages.”
When Miller moved to Superior three years ago, she knew she wanted to keep dance a part of her life and share it with the community. Already volunteering for events and projects at the shooting sports range, she realized that would be a perfect space to hold dance lessons. “I had a vision to get line dancing going, maybe some swing and two step eventually, a lot of the parents at the shooting sports club were really interested in the idea.”
The lessons are set to happen on the third Saturday of every month, but Miller will gauge the public’s interest, and if enough dancers want to come and attend, she will consider in the future adding more throughout the month.
She confessed, “There is not a whole lot to do here, that’s why I opened it up to the younger teenagers as well. I just love country dancing, its great exercise, you meet new people, and something to do with your friends.”
Miller explained that the first hour on Saturday nights will be line dance lessons, followed by more open dancing, where people can try out swing or two-step in pairs.
There will be a $5 cover charge per person, with the proceeds going directly back to the Mineral County Shooting Sports Club, and also water and soda will be available to purchase; no alcohol at these gatherings.
Miller expressed, “Don’t worry about trying to be perfect, come in sneakers or cowboy boots, whatever you’ve got. Give it a whirl and try something new, something wholesome.” The dancing will begin on February 21 at 6:00 p.m. at the Mineral County Shooting Range facility, take exit 55 to 475 Cougar Creek Way.
