Three years after North Idaho College received a show-cause sanction from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the community will learn once and for all whether NIC will retain accreditation.

The NIC Board of Trustees will meet tonight at 6 p.m. in the Lake Coeur d’Alene Room in the Student Union Building on campus for a special meeting. The only item on the agenda is accreditation.

In February 2023, NIC received a show-cause sanction, the last step before loss of accreditation. The sanction stemmed not from financial or academic concerns, but from the governance of the board of trustees.

Last February, the NWCCU reduced the sanction to probation and granted NIC a one-year extension to get back in compliance with three accreditation standards. In October 2025, accreditors found that NIC had made significant progress toward resolving the remaining issues.

Two possible outcomes exist for tonight’s meeting: NIC will receive news that it has returned to good standing or that accreditation is lost.

AC Sheriff Wagner to run for reelection

RITZVILLE — Adams County Sheriff Dale Wagner will run for reelection this year, he announced earlier this week. “Serving as sheriff since 2015 has been the greatest honor of my life,” Wagner wrote in the announcement. “Leading the dedicated men and women of our sheriff’s office means a great deal to our community, and to me, because a strong, professional, and committed team directly impacts the safety and well-being of every citizen.” Wagner, a veteran of the ACSO with more than 28 years of experience, was elected sheriff in 2015 after working as a deputy, then as a detective, a sergeant and eventually as undersheriff, according to the announcement. He cited the ACSO’s work to upgrade the jail, update equipment and training and work with youth among his successes.
